On his quest to get Silmaril and Lúthien’s hand, Beren is imprisoned in Sauron’s dungeon. After the death of all his companions, he’s left helpless and hopeless. In this desperate moment, he sings a song expressing his devotion to the Valar – this song, addressing the seven stars of the Valacirca, the Sickle of the Valar, still shining outside of the stone walls and iron gates of his prison.
The “Valacirca” was part of the "Beren and Lúthien" performance, and closes a block of related songs starting with “Interrogation by Sauron”, “The Duel of Sauron and Finrod Felagund” and “Finrod's Death”. It was composed by Petr Bohdan and offered to False Fellowship (Falešné společenstvo). With his approval, Daniela Binderová adapted Petr’s original melody to be more festive. To their surprise, this simple song became soon very popular among Tolkien’s fans!
Daniela, (translation and editing: Alžběta Kadlecová)
The elves were still asleep by the lake
hen Tintallë enlightened the dome of stars.
She brought the starlight by her labour,
for the elves not to walk astray at awakening.
