Under the influence of his nephew Maeglin, King Turgon ignores the message sent by Lord Ulmo, as well as the warnings of Tuor, and refuses to take his people out of Gondolin. So Tuor and Idril, with the help of the most faithful folk, secretly built a tunnel - an escape route in case of an emergency. After the city was sacked by Morgoth's host, the tunnel became the only hope for the remnants of the Gondolindrim. It is only because of the tunnel that they could escape the burning debris unnoticed and reach the safety of the Grey Havens through the path between the mountains.
