After the wedding of Beren and Lúthien, all men leave to protect Doriath from Morgoth's werewolf Carcharoth and claim the Silmaril. In this song, Lúthien and Melian, left alone in the halls of Menegroth, experience a dark hour waiting, feeling destiny and anticipating both doom and hope.

In the theatre performance, during the interlude, Thingol brings Lúthien the Silmaril (signalizing that Morgoth's wolf is dead), but also Barahir's ring (Beren is dead too). Lúthien accepts the ring, shaking, and after the last verse, her fëa leaves her body...

"The Longing” is one of the last songs written for the “Beren and Lúthien” performace, filling a gap in the story. The first three verses and the tune are by Hana Soukupová, extension by the flute interlude and the last strophe by Daniela Binderová. Powerful message is carried by the simplest possible instrumentation.

(Compiled by Alžběta Kadlecová based on texts by Daniela and Elsa)

Grievous is the hour of longing alone,
dusk falls and my heart is grim.
A sense of footsteps that sound in silence;
they are enclosing Beren, Doriath and me as well.
