Jezdec na soudku Veselá Hobití III. věk Epická
(Barrel Rider)Falešné společenstvo Composed 2013 Recorded 2014
Historical background of the song
This episode from the history of Middle Earth is described in detail in The Hobbit. After Bilbo thanks to the Ring managed to escape from Thranduil’s halls, he was forced to travel the river as an unwelcome passenger of food barrels, which the wood elves floated to the Lake-town. Most of the barrels were empty, except for those into which Bilbo had packed his dwarf friends; and just you try scramble upon an empty floating barrel!
Fictive author
Bilbo.
Origin of the song
I wrote this song on spring 2013 for the Hobbit performance, and it was introduced on Tolkiencon 2014, and repeated on Festival Fantazie 2014 in Chotěboř.
This song grew out of a single funny verse, which came to me when I was imagining how the poor Bilbo is trying to scramble up his barrel: „To jsem byl bloud, že jsem chtěl plout…” (“Oh what a fail, trying to sail... ”)
While Bilbo’s „aria“ is drifting between different keys in an unstable rhythm of the splashing wild water (just as it’s interpreter, who’s running back and forth on the stage following his barrel and barely catching her breath), the quartet of the barrels is swaying comfortably in the dur of a simple pseudofolk melody and looks condescendingly down upon the poor Bilbo.
The song was recorded in September 2014 and is also part of our second CD, the Hobit.
